Glen Velez & Lori Cotler
Breathing Rhythms Workshop
Four-time Grammy Winning Master Drummer Glen Velez & Internationally Celebrated Rhythm Vocalist Lori Cotler
In this workshop you will gain personal insight and hands-on experience to some of the exhilarating techniques and rhythmic stylings of Frame Drum Master Glen Velez and Rhythm Voice acrobat Lori Cotler.
FRAME DRUMS
Glen will demonstrate his unique style of drumming derived from South Indian, Arabic, Central Asian and South Italian traditions.
Using solos on the Tar (North African ), the Riq (Egyptian), the Gaval (Azerbajiani) and the Bodhran (Irish), as his point of departure, Glen shows the techniques clearly by slowing them down and explaining the different hand movements.
Each of these drumming traditions have contributed significantly to the tapestry that Glen has woven together over 30 years of creating his drumming solos. We will spend time exploring the communal nature of drumming using frame drum techniques.
Glen will also show how to use Overtone Singing to increase breath awareness while highlighting its importance to the drumming process.
RHYTHM VOICE
Lori will provide the very important drum language component of this class. Lori's original approach to vocal percussion is based on the synchronization of Voice and Pulse. We will deepen and anchor our rhythmic feel by using simple clapping patterns as we vocalize key rhythmic phrases from the exhilarating South Indian drum language called Solkattu.
In this supportive and musically stimulating setting, we will experience the dynamic fun of rhythm voice and group vocal interplay. Glen will show how drum language syllables are translated into Frame Drumming strokes on the North African Tar drum, the Irish Bodhran and the Arabic Riq. We will experience the power of aligning our voice with our drumming and learn with simple body movements some of the primary rhythms and sounds of frame drumming.
GLEN VELEZ SIGNATURE SHAKER STYLE: AN INTRODUCTION TO A NEW WAY OF PLAYING SHAKERS
Over the past several years Glen has been developing a unique approach to shaker playing based on two wonderful traditional ways of playing the maracas from Venezuela and Colombia. This will open up many new ideas for using these types of instruments in any musical style. Glen will demonstrate the unlimited potential of these instruments, as well as give a step by step approach to developing this multi-hand technique. Shakers will be provided.
